Gourmet Paws

Gourmet Paws partnered with CNP to develop a more affordable product range that would complement their existing premium offerings. By optimising ingredient selection, sourcing cost-effective raw materials, and streamlining formulations, we created two nutritionally balanced products that maintained quality while reducing production costs. The project included formulation development, laboratory testing, compliance support, and label design, resulting in a commercially viable range that enabled the brand to reach a broader market segment without compromising on product integrity.

The Challenge

Gourmet Paws approached us with a clear operational and product development challenge. Their existing communication with their current nutritionist had become inconsistent, resulting in a slow and inefficient development process that limited their ability to scale and innovate.

Alongside this, the client identified a key market opportunity: the development of a more cost-effective product range to complement their existing premium beef and chicken offerings.

The primary requirements included:

·       Development of a budget-friendly alternative range

·       Maintenance of acceptable nutritional and quality standards

·       A simplified, cost-efficient formulation approach

·       A defined macronutrient profile balancing meat and vegetable ingredients

·       Seamless integration into existing manufacturing processes without major operational changes

Our Approach

We began by working closely with Gourmet Paws to understand their current supply chain, ingredient access, and production constraints. Our client provided his existing vegetable supplier, which allowed us to align formulations directly with available raw materials right from the beginning.

From there, we:

·       Engaged multiple meat suppliers, including those already in the client’s network, to secure the most cost-effective and reliable ingredient options

·       Leveraged the client’s existing premix used in their premium range to ensure nutritional consistency across product lines

·       Developed streamlined formulations designed specifically to reduce unnecessary production and ingredient costs

·       Carefully evaluated different meat cuts and protein sources to balance cost efficiency with nutritional integrity

Before finalising any recipes, we ensured all nutritional specifications were met in line with product requirements. Once approved by the client, the formulations were submitted for proximate analysis and microbial testing, both of which confirmed compliance with required standards.

To support market readiness, our in-house design team also developed packaging labels for the two new products, ensuring a cohesive brand extension of the existing Gourmet Paws range.

Key Challenge

The central challenge throughout the project was achieving a lower-cost formulation without compromising product quality or nutritional value.

To address this, we:

·       Simplified ingredient structures to reduce unnecessary cost drivers

·       Optimised meat inclusion levels where appropriate

·       Carefully selected alternative protein sources and cuts to maintain functionality while reducing expense

·       Ensured manufacturing practicality to avoid additional production complexity or equipment changes

This required a balanced approach between cost engineering and nutritional formulation, ensuring the final product remained both commercially viable and technically sound.

The Outcome

The final result delivered exactly what Gourmet Paws set out to achieve: a more affordable product range that could be seamlessly integrated into their existing production process without requiring operational changes.

Key outcomes included:

·       A successfully developed cost-effective alternative to the premium range

·       Maintained nutritional integrity and product quality standards

·       Reduced production costs through optimised ingredient selection and formulation design

·       Full compliance confirmed through laboratory analysis (proximate and microbial testing)

·       Strong alignment with existing manufacturing processes, ensuring easy scalability

Beyond the technical success, the new formulation enabled Gourmet Paws to expand its market reach. The brand is now able to cater not only to premium pet food buyers but also to a broader consumer base seeking high-quality, more affordable options.
